3.3.9 Accessible Authentication (Enhanced)

Level AAA · added in WCAG 2.2

No step in logging in may require a cognitive function test unless you offer another method or support a mechanism that helps, such as password managers and paste. Unlike 3.3.8, recognizing objects or picking an image the user uploaded is not allowed. This is a level AAA criterion: most laws and policies require AA, but it is still worth meeting where you can.

Who it helps

Some people with cognitive, visual or perceptual disabilities cannot reliably pick out objects in images or recognize their own uploaded photo among others. Removing those tests lets them log in without depending on recognition or memory.

How to meet it

Examples

Fails:An object recognition CAPTCHA is the only way to log in (allowed at AA, fails AAA)
<form action="/login" method="post">
  <!-- username and password fields -->
  <fieldset>
    <legend>Select every image that contains a bicycle</legend>
    <!-- grid of nine image checkboxes -->
  </fieldset>
  <button type="submit">Log in</button>
</form>
Passes:Users can sign in with a passkey or an emailed link instead
<form action="/login/link" method="post">
  <label for="email">Email</label>
  <input id="email" type="email" name="email" autocomplete="username webauthn">
  <button type="submit">Email me a sign-in link</button>
</form>
<button type="button" id="passkey-login">Sign in with a passkey</button>

Can a scanner detect this?

No

axe-core has no rule for this criterion. Whether a login step is a cognitive function test, and whether another method exists, needs a person to go through the whole login and recovery flow.

No automated rule tests this criterion. Check it by hand.
