3.3.7 Redundant Entry
Level A · added in WCAG 2.2
If users must give the same information again in the same process, your site must fill it in for them or let them select it. Exceptions apply when re-entry is essential, needed for security, or the earlier information is no longer valid.
Who it helps
People with cognitive or memory disabilities may not remember what they typed in an earlier step, and retyping adds fatigue and errors. People who use switch access or voice input also benefit from typing less.
How to meet it
- Offer a "Same as shipping address" checkbox, or pre-fill the billing fields, in checkout.
- Pre-fill fields in later steps with values entered earlier, and let users change them.
- Keep what users entered when a form reloads with errors, instead of clearing it.
- Show earlier answers on the same page so users can select or copy them, for example in a summary panel.
- Do not count on the browser's autofill; your site must supply the earlier information itself.
- Know the exceptions: memory games, password confirmation fields and expired data may still be asked for again.
Examples
<h2>Step 3: Billing address</h2>
<label for="b-street">Street address</label>
<input id="b-street" name="billing-street" autocomplete="billing street-address">
<label for="b-zip">ZIP code</label>
<input id="b-zip" name="billing-zip" autocomplete="billing postal-code"><h2>Step 3: Billing address</h2>
<input type="checkbox" id="same" name="billing-same" checked>
<label for="same">Same as shipping address: 12 Oak St, Portland, OR 97205</label>
<fieldset id="billing-fields" hidden>
<legend>Billing address</legend>
<!-- fields, shown only when the box is unchecked -->
</fieldset><label for="b-zip">Billing ZIP code</label>
<input id="b-zip" name="billing-zip" autocomplete="billing postal-code" value="97205">Can a scanner detect this?
No
axe-core checks single pages and cannot follow a multi-step process. A person must complete each process and note any step that asks again for information given earlier without filling it in or offering it to select.
No automated rule tests this criterion. Check it by hand.
Common mistakes
- Asking for the billing address again after the shipping address with no way to reuse it.
- Clearing all fields when the server returns a validation error.
- Asking for the same email address on both the first and last steps of a sign-up flow.
- Treating browser autofill as enough, when the site itself must offer the earlier data.
