1.4.6 Contrast (Enhanced)

Level AAA · added in WCAG 2.0

Text and images of text need a contrast ratio of at least 7:1, and large text needs at least 4.5:1. This is level AAA; most laws and policies require only the AA levels in 1.4.3, but higher contrast is worth using for body text where you can.

Who it helps

People with low vision, roughly equivalent to 20/80 acuity, need more contrast than the AA level gives. Older adults with reduced contrast sensitivity and anyone reading in glare benefit too.

How to meet it

Examples

Fails:#767676 on #fff is 4.54:1: passes AA, fails AAA for 16px text
body { background: #fff; }
.note {
  color: #767676;
  font-size: 16px;
}
Fails:A 16px button label: #fff on #1a5fb4 is 6.29:1, just short of 7:1
.btn-primary {
  background: #1a5fb4;
  color: #fff;
  font-size: 16px;
}
Passes:Darker gray text: #595959 on #fff is 7.00:1
body { background: #fff; }
.note {
  color: #595959;
  font-size: 16px;
}
Passes:A darker blue background: #fff on #174ea6 is 7.85:1
.btn-primary {
  background: #174ea6;
  color: #fff;
  font-size: 16px;
}

Can a scanner detect this?

No

axe-core's default rules test only the AA ratios from 1.4.3; its 7:1 check is off by default. Any contrast checker can measure 7:1 on solid colors, but text over images, gradients, and in hover or focus states needs a manual check.

No automated rule tests this criterion. Check it by hand.
