1.4.12 Text Spacing

Level AA · added in WCAG 2.1

When a user increases text spacing, no content or function may be lost. The test values are line height 1.5 times the font size, paragraph spacing 2 times, letter spacing 0.12 times and word spacing 0.16 times.

Who it helps

People with dyslexia and low vision often read faster with wider spacing, which they apply with a browser extension or user stylesheet. If your layout clips or overlaps the text, they lose content.

How to meet it

Examples

Fails:Inline !important spacing that user styles cannot override
<p style="line-height: 1.1 !important; letter-spacing: 0 !important;">
  Free returns within 30 days.
</p>
Fails:A fixed-height card that clips text once spacing grows
.card {
  height: 120px;
  overflow: hidden;
}
Passes:Spacing set in a stylesheet without !important, so users can override it
<p class="promo">Free returns within 30 days.</p>
<style>
  .promo { line-height: 1.4; }
</style>
Passes:A card that grows with its content
.card {
  min-height: 120px;
  padding: 1rem;
}

Can a scanner detect this?

Partly

axe-core flags inline style attributes that use !important to lock line-height, letter-spacing or word-spacing below the test values. It cannot tell whether text is clipped or overlaps once spacing changes. Apply the four spacing values and look at the page yourself.
