Alt text checker
Paste the HTML of a page or part of one. Every image is listed with its alt text and anything that needs fixing.
Good alt text
Say what the image means in its context: “Red leather boot, side view”, not “boot.jpg”. For a link or button, say where it goes or what it does. Use alt="" for pure decoration (WCAG 1.1.1).
What this checker can’t judge
It finds missing and clearly unhelpful alt text. Whether an alt text is accurate and useful needs a person who can see the image.
Questions
- Should every image have alt text?
- Every image needs an alt attribute. Informative images need a description; decorative ones need an empty alt="" so screen readers skip them.
- Does my pasted HTML leave my computer?
- No. The check runs in your browser.
